There are variants of these processes which are described on the websites of the various technology providers. The MIDREX process runs without coke, emits less CO 2 and thus is considered to be an alternative to the blast furnace ironmaking process. The Circored and Finmet / Finored gas-based processes utilize iron ore fines as feedstock.The SLRN coal-based rotary kiln process uses lump ore and, increasingly, pellets as feedstock. (hereinafter referred to as 'Midrex Inc.'), a wholly-owned US subsidiary of Kobe Steel, possesses the MIDREX note) process using natural gas as a source gas for reducing iron ore. The Midrex® and Energiron gas-based processes use predominantly iron ore pellets as feedstock, but sometimes with inclusion of lump ore in the furnace charge. Illustrations of the principal processes are shown below. The second process investigated was the direct reduction of iron ore pellets or lumps in a vertical shaft furnace, such as a MIDREX furnace.
